Forty random patios grouped by surface were observed at colonial centre and indigenous neighbourhood to evaluate its contribution to ecosystem services provision. We found and high surface reduction of patios and even a disappearance in some dwellings. The second sort of surveys studied the rate of division of urban lots and the effects in patios through a GIS analysis with field corroboration. The study reflects a clear association of patio typologies and city sectors (colonial centre, indigenous neighbourhood and outskirts), and also some degradation factors highlighting surface reduction. We made several surveys in the city, the first to characterize the patios in relation to the floristic richness of cultivated and spontaneous plants. Patios are the most extended kind of private urban greenspaces in the city. This study documents the importance of “patios” for the urban ecology, nature conservation and human well-being in León city (Nicaragua).
